History of Establishment

Department of Physiology was established in 1970 with the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Initially, Department of Physiology  was located at Jalan Dr. Latif, Kuala Lumpur. Upon completion in 1978, the Department of Physiology was transferred at the 4th floor, Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz, Kuala Lumpur. In July 2014, Department of Physiology was relocated permanently at Pre-Clinical Building at Hospital Tuanku Chancellor Muhriz, UKM Medical Centre, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. The department is divided into two where administrative office is located at 18th floor, while all laboratories are located at 9th floor.

The first Head of the Department of Physiology is Dr. Abdul Rahim bin Omar. Up to 1981, most academic staffs are from Indonesia. Currently, the Department of Physiology, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Fatimah Ibrahim, as Head of Department and assisted by 12 academic staffs, one research officer and 13 supporting staffs.

The main activity of the department is teaching physiology to undergraduate students (Program of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Audiology and Speech Sciences and Diploma students) and Master of Medical Science (Physiology). All staffs are also actively engaged in research of  both graduate (Master of Medical Science and Doctor of Philosophy) and undergraduate students (Degree of Medical Doctor and Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences).
